Red Oak, IA
Red Oak gets its name from Red Oak Creek which runs through the community and was famous for the red oaks on its banks. First settlers turned up there in the 1850s. In 1865 it evolved into the official county seat of Montgomery County and the courthouse which formerly in the middle of the county seven miles east in Frankfort, Iowa was transported to the community in the heart of a snow storm. That
courthouse stayed in place until the current Montgomery County Courthouse (Iowa) was constructed in 1891. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1869 the community was formally founded when the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad (known as the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad at the time) showed up. The community was named Red Oak Junction by the railroad on March 20, 1876. The junction ended up being a line off the main Chicago to Council Bluffs, Iowa line which traveled to Nebraska City, Nebraska and on to Lincoln, Nebraska. The Junction name was shed in 1901 even though the community continues to commemorate its history each summer in Junction Days. In 1903, a new depot was opened up by the railroad. It now serves as a museum celebrating the community’s important military history and its disproportionate number of deaths in a variety of wars and most famously in World War II. The depot is one of 9 places in Montgomery County on the National Register of Historic Places listings inside Montgomery County, Iowa.
