Grand Island, NE
In 1857, thirty-five German settlers left Davenport, Iowa, and went to the west to Nebraska to begin a new settlement on an island identified by French traders as La Grande Isle, which was shaped by the Wood River and the Platte River. The settlers hit their destination on July 4, 1857, and by September had constructed homes using nearby timber. Over the following 9 years, the settlers had to overcome a lot of challenges, such as blizzards and clashes with Native Americans.
Surveyors from the Union Pacific Railroad organized a town known as Grand Island Station and a lot of settlers living on Grand Island moved to the new town, situated somewhat inland from the island. In 1868 the railroad arrived at the area, bringing improved trade and business. By 1870, 1,057 individuals lived in the town and in 1872 the town ended up being incorporated as Grand Island.
In about 1890, sugar beets were introduced as a plant in Nebraska. The first sugar beet processing factory in the United States was built in the southwest part of Grand Island.
