From the 1830s to the 1860s, the region saw a lot of traffic because of the Mormon Trail, which moved along the northern bank of the Platte River. A ferry linked the two banks of the Elkhorn River close to Fremont. It was a significant overland path for emigrant settlers visiting the West, the military and hunters.
Fremont was created in 1856, and was named after the American explorer, politician and military official General John C. Frémont.
Because of the town’s geographically central location, the First Transcontinental Telegraph line, railroad and highway went through or very close to Fremont. Original brick areas of the “Old Lincoln Highway” situated east of Fremont, on the way to Omaha.
On January 10, 1976, in downtown Fremont, the Pathfinder Hotel exploded because of a natural gas leak in the basement. During the time the hotel was being used as apartments, mainly occupied by older folks. Additionally, it was a meeting place for philanthropic and business organizations, and had a pharmacy on the northwest corner. The explosion cracked windows around the city, and the resulting fire killed 23 individuals and destroyed the majority of the city block of the hotel.
Fremont received national attention in 2010 when citizens approved a referendum which would prohibit illegal immigrants from renting and working in the community.
On June 20, 2011 at around 8 pm local time, a huge squall line of storms moved into the Fremont region and dropped an EF1 tornado east of downtown causing a damage path 6 miles long and 700 yards wide. There were no reported injuries or deaths.
